I-75 Exits at North Port Getting Improvements

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably sick of the constant traffic backups, fender benders, and near-misses at the North Port exits on I-75. And let’s not forget the daily circus of drivers going right just to go left — because that’s the only way you can. Well — good news is finally here because there will soon be North Port I-75 Exit Improvements.

On June 25th, I attended a public meeting hosted by the City of North Port, which included representatives from several City departments and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). They shared updates on upcoming infrastructure projects around the city — and two long-overdue improvements are on the way.

FDOT improvements in North Port to Exits 182 Sumter Blvd and 179 Toledo Blade Blvd will begin in late 2025 and are expected to be completed by mid-2026. I’ve already seen survey and utility trucks around the Sumter area, so planning is actively underway. Naturally, these projects always seem to begin just before our busy season, but hopefully it will move along quickly and without incident.

What’s Coming:

·         Traffic lights at both interchanges

·         Pedestrian crosswalks for improved safety

·         Two northbound left-turn lanes on both Sumter and Toledo Blade — making it easier to access I-75 northbound

These changes are designed to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of crashes and delays that have become all too common at both exits.

What About the Yorkshire Interchange?

At this time, there are no immediate plans to add an I-75 exit at Yorkshire, though the topic may come up again as Activity Centers 6 and 10 develop. FDOT’s position is that current traffic volumes don’t justify the expense — and any new I-75 ramps require Congressional approval, since it’s part of the federal interstate system.

Looking forward to safer, smarter, and smoother traffic at both North Port exits. Progress is coming — and not a moment too soon.
